Online Challan Payment: a simple guide to check and pay traffic e-challans
Online challan payment lets you clear a traffic fine from your phone instead of visiting a traffic office or court. Most fines in India are now issued as e-challans, either by a traffic officer with a handheld device or automatically by speed and red-light cameras. Each e-challan is linked to your vehicle registration number, so the first step is always to check challan by vehicle number and see what is pending.
Unpaid challans do not disappear. They can be forwarded to court, they can hold up the sale or transfer of your vehicle, and they keep adding to your driving record. With Online Challan Pay you can check every pending e-challan in one place, verify the request with an OTP, and pay by UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking in a couple of minutes. You get a receipt straight away and an update when the challan is cleared.
What is an e-challan?
An e-challan is an electronic notice for a traffic violation, issued under the Motor Vehicles Act. It records the vehicle number, the offence, the date, time and place, and the fine. You usually get an SMS on the mobile number linked to the vehicle registration, but many people miss it because their number on record is old. That is why it is worth checking your vehicle every few months, and always before you sell it, renew insurance or take it out of state.
How to check challan by vehicle number
On this page, enter your vehicle registration number exactly as it appears on the number plate, for example UP80AB1234, DL3CAB1234 or a Bharat series number like 22BH1234AA. Add your mobile number and give consent. We send an OTP to that number; once you enter it, we fetch the pending challans from authorised data sources and list each one with its challan number, offence, place, date and amount.

Online challan vs court challan
An online challan can be settled by paying the fine. If a challan is not paid within the time allowed, or if the offence needs a judge's decision, it is sent to a court, often a virtual court. Court challans follow the court's own process and the final amount is decided by the court. We mark every challan clearly as Online or Court so you know which is which, and our support team explains the next steps for court challans.
Common traffic fines in India
Fines were increased by the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. The table below lists typical amounts for common offences. States can set their own compounding amounts, so the fine on your challan may be different.
| Offence | Typical fine (first offence) |
|---|---|
| Riding without helmet | ₹1,000 and licence disqualification up to 3 months |
| Driving without seat belt | ₹1,000 |
| Over-speeding (light motor vehicle) | ₹1,000 – ₹2,000 |
| Dangerous driving, red light jump, phone use | ₹1,000 – ₹5,000 |
| Driving without licence | ₹5,000 |
| Driving without insurance | ₹2,000 |
| Without valid PUC certificate | Up to ₹10,000 |
| Drunk driving | Up to ₹10,000 and/or imprisonment |
What happens if you don't pay a challan?
An unpaid e-challan can be sent to court, after which you may receive a summons. Pending challans can also block services like the transfer of ownership when you sell the vehicle, and repeated offences can lead to suspension of your driving licence. Paying on time is almost always cheaper and simpler.
Is it safe to pay challan online here?
Yes. Every check is protected by OTP, so only someone with access to the mobile number can request the records. Payments are processed by a regulated payment gateway; we never see or store your card or UPI PIN. We collect only what is needed to find and settle your challans, and you can ask us to delete your data at any time. Read our Privacy Policy for details.
